
Pasillas wins Juror's Mention at high school
exhibition

Belvidere High School art
student Allie Pasillas won Juror's Mention in the 2010 Rock Valley
College High School Exhibition. Under the direction of photography
teacher Jilian Reints, Allie created a black and white panoramic shot of
a busy city street. This award-winning piece is on display at Rock
Valley College through the end of March.

"Sock it to Heart Disease"

group at Seth Whitman Elementary School known as K-Kids held a sock
hop to benefit the American Heart Association. "Sock It to
Heart Disease" was attended by 180 third through fifth graders and
raised $550. Minion Musik volunteered to DJ the dance, and
Belvidere North's track team and Key Club members chaperoned the
event. |

Sock hop to benefit victims of earthquake in Haiti

The
Belvidere High School Student Council is hosting a "Sock Hop for Haiti"
dance-a-thon and is looking for participants 12 years and older.
Date: Saturday, March 20
Time: Doors open at 1:00 p.m., with dancing from
1:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Place: Belvidere South Middle School gymnasium
(919 East Sixth Street, Belvidere)
Registration fee for participating couples is $20. Spectators are
welcome ($3 adults, $2 seniors and students, children under 12 are
free), and refreshments will be served.
Proceeds will benefit Rockford Sharefest and Million Meals for Haiti.

BNHS basketball
players to showcase their skills

Belvidere North High School, have been selected to participate in
two upcoming events.
The Rising Stars
Classic is Saturday, March 27 4:00 p.m. at Harlem High School.
The NIC-10 top seniors will play against the area's top senior
players. A boys game will also be played. |

The second event is the Rock River Valley Senior Classic April 9 and
10. The Classic begins with a skills competition on Friday, April 9
at 6:30 p.m. at Jefferson High School. Players will
participate in a skills challenge, media challenge, hot shot
contest, three-point knock out contest, and a school spirit
challenge. On Saturday the 10th, the girls will play at the
Bradley Center in Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m., with a boys game to
follow. The players will be treated to dinner, will be a guest
at the Milwaukee Bucks v. Boston Celtics shoot-around, and will
watch the game. |

Middle and high school students participate in Science Olympiad

On
Saturday, March 6 a team of 15 sixth through eighth grade students from
Belvidere South Middle School as well as students from both high schools competed at the Regional Science Olympiad
Competition held at Rock Valley College. Students competed in
twenty-three events covering all areas of science. Belvidere South
students finished the day in fourth place, and students from Belvidere
High School took 5th in the competition. Both teams will travel to Champaign
on April 10 to compete at the State level.

- Third grade students at Caledonia Elementary School recently studied
patriotic symbols in social studies. After discussing their
school's pride, colors, mascot, and programs, teacher Sherri
Glennon challenged the students to create flags representative of
Caledonia Elementary School.

Artwork of former
student featured in youth
art month poster

Congratulations to former Belvidere High School student Tiffany Seymour
for having her artwork accepted by the Illinois Art Education
Association for its youth art month poster. Each year the IAEA
selects 20 works of art from over 300 entries to create this poster.
Working under the direction of art teacher Jilian Reints, Tiffany
created a water color self portrait depicting things she would leave
behind after graduation.
The
poster will be on display at Belvidere High School and the Brick Cafe
through the end of March.

National Youth Leadership Foundation conference in D.C.

Two Belvidere High School students
recently returned from Washington, D.C. after participating in the
National Youth Leadership Foundation conference.
Nominated by Social Studies teacher Ryan
Geary, Max Bahling and Craig Steinkamp attended the week-long
seminar relating to national security issues. Max was elected
to the position of Secretary of Defense while Craig served as Senate
Majority Leader. |

District #100 to discuss
proposed cost saving options at public forum

On February 9, 2010 the
Belvidere School District hosted a public forum at which financial
consultant PMA presented a multi-year budget forecast. With the
State of Illinois now $2.6 million behind in its payments to the
District, proposed cost saving options are being considered for
the 2010-2011 school year.
The public is invited to a
forum on Thursday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Belvidere Central Middle
School (8787 Beloit Road, Belvidere) to review the proposed options.
