We perform in-depth analyses of instructional space utilization as a key component of our space planning services, focusing on utilization and occupancy. We measure utilization from multiple angles—exploring utilization over time for each day of the week; and by individual rooms, building, college, or campus as a whole. Our understanding of classroom and laboratory space use is developed through an investigation of academic program needs, class scheduling, pedagogical approaches, and institutional culture. We also highlight other factors affecting utilization, such as adjacencies with academic departments or faculty offices, technological capacity, facility condition, and room configuration.
