The design team embraced the concept of “temporary” buildings to rethink traditional models of residential life construction on Dartmouth College's Hanover campus
Sasaki在2014年完成了对达特茅斯学院的住宿模式为期两年的研究,就优化学生的住宿生活体验提出各种策略。校方采纳研究报告建议,在2016年正式推行舍堂制度。新的制度将进一步提升住宿生的归属感,增进同学之间的友谊,并通过各种非正式的舍堂活动促进深入的学术交流。现有的一系列学生公寓将划分为六个舍堂社区。为了配合新型的舍堂运作模式和功能内容,以及适应现代学生的生活需要,其中四个舍堂社区必须增设额外的公共活动区域。Sasaki的工作便是设计两座临时的舍堂活动中心。

设计团队以“临时建筑”为主导概念,反思住宿生活的传统建构模式。设计方案贯彻高瞻远瞩的思维方式,集众多优点于一身:花费不高的简约设计大大缩短施工期,确保舍堂制度能尽快投入运作;灵活配置的功能内容为住宿生提供极大弹性,通过日常生活摸索出最符合舍堂未来发展的空间设施;建筑物还可按照实际情况改造,以满足日后各种潜在使用需求。

The North Park/South House Center, is a tensile membrane structure
两座舍堂活动中心在2016年秋季学期前落成启用,深受学生喜爱。不少人认为新建筑提供了校园一直所缺乏的、如“起居室”一般的活动空间——那里比图书馆更休闲惬意,比食堂区更和谐友善,比传统的学生公寓更有凝聚力。

在建筑设计上,两栋舍堂活动中心各有特色、风格迥異,强化了项目的实验意图。A栋为张拉膜结构,亮灯后在晚间绽放柔和光芒;B栋则是木材元素丰富的水泥板包层建筑,配搭合宜的落地窗为室内空间带来自然采光。两者都有开放的平面布局以及外露的结构和机电系统,可移动的家具容许学生“当家做主”,按需求灵活地运用空间设施,发掘最佳配置方式。

Implementing these experimental structures allows Dartmouth to learn what kinds of spaces students most need, insights that will helpfully inform the design and construction of more permanent buildings supporting student life in the future
