The design team embraced the concept of “temporary” buildings to rethink traditional models of residential life construction on Dartmouth College's Hanover campus
Sasaki在2014年完成了对达特茅斯学院的住宿模式为期两年的研究，就优化学生的住宿生活体验提出各种策略。校方采纳研究报告建议，在2016年正式推行舍堂制度。新的制度将进一步提升住宿生的归属感，增进同学之间的友谊，并通过各种非正式的舍堂活动促进深入的学术交流。现有的一系列学生公寓将划分为六个舍堂社区。为了配合新型的舍堂运作模式和功能内容，以及适应现代学生的生活需要，其中四个舍堂社区必须增设额外的公共活动区域。Sasaki的工作便是设计两座临时的舍堂活动中心。

两座舍堂活动中心在2016年秋季学期前落成启用，深受学生喜爱。不少人认为新建筑提供了校园一直所缺乏的、如“起居室”一般的活动空间——那里比图书馆更休闲惬意，比食堂区更和谐友善，比传统的学生公寓更有凝聚力。

在建筑设计上，两栋舍堂活动中心各有特色、风格迥異，强化了项目的实验意图。A栋为张拉膜结构，亮灯后在晚间绽放柔和光芒；B栋则是木材元素丰富的水泥板包层建筑，配搭合宜的落地窗为室内空间带来自然采光。两者都有开放的平面布局以及外露的结构和机电系统，可移动的家具容许学生“当家做主”，按需求灵活地运用空间设施，发掘最佳配置方式。
