On June 4, 2019, the City of Boston announced a long-anticipated City Hall Plaza renovation project, led by Sasaki, on June 4 2019. The project envisions the renovated “people’s plaza” as a universally accessible civic space that all Bostonians and visitors can enjoy.
“This renovation will turn our seven-acre space into a welcoming, accessible space for all, featuring new civic spaces for events to areas for families to enjoy together,” says Boston’s Mayor Walsh. “Creating a new People’s Plaza will help us achieve our goals of making one of Boston’s most-used public spaces better for all residents.”
The City of Boston’s press release outlines a range of features, including a new yard for playspaces, art installations, and more; seven adaptable event venues; and a sustainablitity initiative that includes more permeable surfaces to absorb stormwater, 100 new trees offering shade and increased air quality, and recycled paving, among other features.
“Boston City Hall Plaza has long been Boston’s place to gather, celebrate and make residents’ voices heard,” says Isabel Zempel, Sasaki landscape design principal. “This historic Plaza recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and these updates will bring the Plaza into the modern century with improved infrastructure, sustainability, and public spaces. The Plaza’s renovation will honor its original intentions and history while making it a more accessible place for all.”
Since its announcement earlier this month, the schematic designs shared with the public and members of the press have been positively received. Read more about the project in The Boston Globe, WBUR, The Boston Herald, and Architectural Record.
